One of the labels I often hear from high performers is:
“I’m a workaholic.”
Or maybe you are simply taking a lot of action?
I know people who work long hours, have multiple jobs or run businesses, lead teams, raise children, facilitate workshops and trainings, play music professionally, are accomplished dancers, serve on board committees, travel extensively, do charity work, renovate houses, and still have energy at the end of the day.
(To my clients who recognize themselves in this description, yes, you are rock stars!)
The question is not how much you are doing.
The question is: from which place are you doing it?
I first learnt this approach, called Beyond Goals, from John Overdurf in 2021.
Instead of focusing on the result, you connect to the state you want to BE in.
How would you be as a person if you had already created what you want?
I teach my clients to create from their “end state”, aka the state they want to be in, once the goal is achieved.
And that becomes the starting point.
Beyond Goals is different from “SMART” goals or “BHAG” (Big Hairy Audacious) goals.
We just go… beyond.
Once you are in touch with this “end state” within, ask yourself:
“What is the smallest step I can take now?”
Then take it. And once it is taken, ask:
“What do I now know that I did not know before?”
Then, from this place, take the next step.
Rinse and repeat.
When you are connected to the state you want to live from, you stop trying to force results.
Instead, you create from the energy of the person you are becoming.
And taking action from overflow is a different experience than taking action from pressure, hurry or depletion.
There is more on this approach, of course.
Want to discuss why SMART goals are actually not smart at all?
